Paralysis in the Pew: Treating the Malady of Spiritual Quiescence, by Jeffrey T Rainey

Shameful secrets can fester in the dark recesses of our minds and inflame our hearts with recrimination and resentment. AA saved my life and I can never put into words the gratitude I have for AA. I cannot express how happy it has allowed my wife, family and friends to become. Today this would be termed “despite negative consequences”. AA was co-founded 80 years ago when Bill Wilson passed on a message of hope to Dr Bob, or Dr Robert Smith to give his full name. The most beautiful thing about me most days is the fruits of my recovery.

  • One can see how this concept of sin disease or in other words spiritual malady could be and was applied to early AA and incorporated into the Big Book of AA.

  • The newcomer gave me an example of a resentment he was experiencing after this guy at a meeting said “get off your pink cloud” a phrase that refers to the sometimes mildly ecstatic feelings of early recovery.
  • That will be lifted if you correctly follow the twelve steps in the book.

The original power greater than himself, as for millions of alcoholics over the last 80 years is another alcoholic. One recovering alcoholic or a group of recovering alcoholics is a power greater than oneself. I respond to feelings of humiliation by humiliating you, I react to my chronic shame by attempting to created shame in you. These are my main negative emotional reactions to the world that often scare me and make me feel ashamed.

I never say I am upset because it also seems to be an undifferentiated emotion that I have trouble accessing, mentalising and expressing.
